6 Ways to Clean Your Room for a Good Night's Sleep

With another season fleeting by, there is one thing we all dread doing before the summer — spring cleaning. We have worked and lived in our rooms more during this year than ever before. A relaxing environment is so  important for quality sleep, but we often overlook our sleep space. We go to great lengths to improve our sleep but neglect the space we retreat to after a long, stressful day. Keeping our bedrooms clean and comfortable is essential for a good night’s rest.

Why a Clean Room Is Important for Better Sleep

Studies have shown that people sleep better in a clean, decluttered bedroom.

Clear your mind.

A cluttered room can distract you at night from getting a good night’s rest. Scientific research shows that we feel more refreshed and happier after decluttering our rooms.

Improve air quality.

Studies found a link between prolonged air pollution and sleep apnea. Clean and clear air helps you breathe better and reduces sleep disturbances. Dusting your room regularly and vacuuming (especially if you have a carpeted floor) gets rid of the dust particles and allergens that irritate the throat and eyes and cause coughing and sneezing.

Improve your morning.

Look back on the times you woke up in a disorganised, messy room —  you probably didn’t think twice, but it does affect your mood right when you wake up. Waking up in a clean, fresh room can reduce stress and help kickstart your morning!

How to Spring Clean Your Bedroom

Spring cleaning to improve sleep

Identify the things that don’t belong in the bedroom.

Our bedroom often becomes a dumping ground when we’re in a rush.First, identify what items do not belong there — items like kids toys, office papers, dishes, or midnight snacks.

Browse through your belongings.

Do you really need that chair in your room, which you only use to dump your clothes on? Sarah Giller Nelson, a professional organiser, says, “Chairs in a bedroom are magnets for clutter.” If you must keep a chair, use hangers or a hook behind a door or closet to hang your clothes. Throw out everything else that you no longer use or need.

Use containers to keep your trinkets.

Have a bunch of keys, loose change, rings, or makeup lying around on your dresser? Get little containers for those items. You could also recycle old bowls, trays, or small boxes in your house and use them as a container as well.

Clean your bed.

It is recommended to clean your sheets and pillowcases at least once a week in hot water. Our tip: after cleaning your sheets, spray our Sweet Dreams Mist onto your pillow or sheets to aid relaxation.
