The Secret To Beauty Sleep

We’re obsessed with food trends, technology and sleep. Ask anyone about his or her sleep and we usually have something to say. We have our own rating system like Trip Advisor or Yelp, you only ever hear about the good or bad sleep reviews. Most of us can’t think of anything else but jumping back into bed our days are consumed with thoughts of snuggling back into a deep slumber from the moment we wake up.

As we approach the year of sleep, we look at different products that add benefits to the hours we spend snoozing. Russell Foster a circadian neuroscientist studies the sleep cycles of the brain and highlights that if we live to 90 years old, we’ll spend 32 years asleep. That’s a third of our life spent asleep, so surely we want to make the most of it? An Australian company, The Goodnight Co. founded by two busy mothers who are passionate about getting a good night discovered the benefits of sleeping on silk. The benefits of a good night’s sleep are multitude for the mind and body but what could we add to our sleep routine to help cut down our beauty routine the next morning? Sleeping on silk wasn’t just for the 80’s it’s made a comeback with a sleep swag of benefits.

Lauren McCowan, Creative Director from Haircare Australia, commented, “Sleeping on silk has many benefits for our hair, not just in style longevity but general health and appearance. Traditional bedding draws moisture from our hair while we sleep and in extreme cases can cause thinning and dried out follicles. The Goodnight Co’s silk pillowcases are 22 Momme and 100% Mulberry silk and this added luxury makes your sleeping hours the very best you can get for your hair. Silk is incredibly gentle on the hair and does not catch the hair the way cotton does so for women with sensitised or damaged hair from chemical services; it will ensure you have fewer knots and tangles. It also helps to maintain an even heat on the head during the night so it reduces sweating and sebum production. Silk contributes to the maintenance of the hairs hydration and keeps it shiny to preserve your hair, whether a salon blow-dry lasting longer or helping to lock in treatments. Look at silk as an insurance policy to continue to maintain the work you already put into your keeping your crowning glory at its best.”

According to Dr Goesel Anson, Plastic Surgeon and Creator of JuveRest, "sleep wrinkles are the lines that are formed when the face is compressed against a pillow night after night and they occur in predictable locations based on fixed anchor points that hold the skin to bone." The gentle fibres of silk help eliminate face creases before they start.

Silk products not only add the kind of luxury we usually set aside from beauty salons and spas but they feel delightful on the skin, especially in hot climates.  Silk is a natural temperature regulator and helps the skin breath, so it’s good for people who suffer sensitive skin or irritation and some women have reported it’s ideal for hot flushes.

We wear eye masks when we travel, and most airlines hand them out and while we usually don’t take this ritual to our every night routines, there’s something for cutting out the distractions in the bedroom. We’ve been told to remove technology, sleep in a well-ventilated room but The Goodnight Co. have sorted a solution by adding qualities materials like their Mulberry Silk eye mask can help calm and center our minds. The breathable, anti-absorbent qualities keep moisture under the mask, ensuring the eyes stay hydrated and youthful and any skin cream in your sleep routine will be benefited from the silk eye mask. Imagine cutting down those scared getting ready minutes in the morning by waking up the crease-free skin and soft, tangle-free hair.

You're either a morning person or a night owl we can all benefit from a night-time ritual and while we’ve all got our routines before tucking into bed. Most include brushing teeth, going to the toilet and reading we’re going to add some much-needed silk to our sleep.

We’re onboard with being our own Prince Charming and entering into the world where we take control of our dreams. We say sleep more and cut through the beauty routine while we’re there.
